This listing is for an antique vintage wood shafted 38 1/4" Iron.It is an early smooth face concave lofter. Marked W & G Ashford (somewhat faint) and Mild Steel. Looks like a quality hand made 1890's club. Long thick hosel and wide sole. The head is clean and not all rusted. Yes it does have the expected play nicksand dings. It also has a nice even dark patina. Please look at the zoom pictures for a better idea of condition. Theshaft is an unmarked hickory. It is straight, I see no... cracks and it is has some play at the hosel. All hickory shafted clubs should be reset prior to play. The grip is the original sewn leather wrap (Bussey) that is in very good vintage condition. Great for displayor as a gift for your favorite golfer. A quality piece. 48* loft and an E 7 swingweight if you are considering play. Put it in your gutty ball play set. It qualifies for all gutty events. If you are considering playing with this club, while I see no issues with this hickory shaft (other than those mentioned above), I suggest that whipping be added just above the hosel to help prevent breakage. These old hickory shafts often have hidden defects and are liable to break at any time. I do not guarantee hickory shafts against breakage when put into play. Never hit an old hickory shafted club off a driving range mat. Never hit an old hickory shafted wood with a hard range ball.
