Wing Commander George 'Grumpy' Unwin DSO DFM :
joined the RAF in 1929, and in 1936 was posted to Duxford joining 19 Squadron as a Sergeant Pilot. He was one of the first pilots in the RAF to fly the Spitfire. With the start of WWII 19 Squadron were posted to RAF Hornchurch and George Unwin, now one of the Squadrons most experienced pilots, took par...t in the air battles over France and Dunkirk, scoring 3.5 air victories. He flew with 19 Squadron through out the Battle of Britain. He was commissioned in 1941 and after some time as an instructor, returned to operations now flying the mighty Mosquito with 16 Squadron.
He ended WWII with 13 air to air victories, 2 shared, 2 unconfirmed, and 2 probables.
He passed away in June 2006.
