VINTAGE 1930'S MARKS BROTHERS CO. BELMONT PARK HORSE RACE BOARD GAME
This auction features a wonderful horse race board game from the 1930's made in America by the Marks Brothers Company of Boston. I believe it to be complete, although there is no parts list anywhere to go by.
It comes with six metal race horses, each with its own number painted on the bottom of the piece. Someone years ago attached a bit of felt to each horse to, I'm sure, make them slide alo...ng the race track easier. To put it bluntly. they are very cool. They have a nice heft to them and are about the best game pieces I have seen. Each one has suffered a tiny bit of paint loss and the numbers on #2 and #4 are difficult to read, but they still look great.
The set also comes with four dice and the instructions explain what the colored dice is for. There are also four wood hurdles you may place anywhere on the track to create a steeplechase horse race and In the instructions it tells you how to get over these hurdles. And finally, there are probably over 100 counters with a dollar sign on them used to place your bets. There are three or four that have lost most of the dollar sign on them.
The cover to the box has three different places where it has been taped together sometime in the past. One corner is torn and was taped together years ago but that tape has also come detached and no longer holds the corner in place. Another corner has tape on the outside of the box and is still holding the corner together even though there is also a piece of the corner missing. The third tear is taped from the inside and also still holding the two pieces together. The bottom of the box holding the playing pieces is still very solid with no issues at all.
The game board is absolutely beautiful with wonderful graphics throughout the track and shows a different racing scene in each corner. The tri-fold board is massive and each section measures 17 inches by 15 1/2 inches. As you can see from the picture, the Horse Race Game emblem on the front of the game board is in great condition also with only the top right corner missing. The outside corners of the game board show some wear but have come through the years in overall excellent condition. The inside seams where the board folds together are in perfect shape and have no rips or cracks in them. Except for a bit of wear on the corners of the board it is in really great condition for being 80-90 years old.
Inside the box are a set of instructions on how to play the game and set up your betting pools. The instructions are also in wonderful condition with only a teeny tiny tear on top. All in all, a great game from the Great Depression in great condition.
