Here we have an Antique H. D. Smith & Co. PERFECT HANDLE Heavy Duty Screwdriver, 1/2" Flat Tip, 9-1/2" Long. The H.D. Smith & Company was founded in 1855 in Plantsville, Conn. The company operated as a foundry and merchant drop-forger. After 1900 tool production became an important part of the company's business, and their best known product was a line of tools with riveted wooded handles sold under the "Perfect Handle" brand. The tools supplied with "Perf...ect" handles included screwdrivers, pipe and nut wrenches, open-end wrenches, and even a valve lifter. W.S. Ward patented the Perfect Handle screw driver on Aug. 25, 1903 ( Pat. No. 737, 179), and assigned the patent to the H. D. Smith company for manufacture of the tool. The tool is identified on the upper section of the shaft. This heavy duty screwdriver example is in very good condition with nice solid hickory wood inserts. The wood only has minor nicks and chips here and there, no cracks. **Please remember to leave Feedback. I will gladly reciprocate. :-)
