Item History & Price

Information:
Reference Number: Avaluer:15927525Tribal Affiliation: Plains / Sioux
Original Description:
Exceptionally rare and beautiful, ca1910’s Native American Plains / Sioux Indian, Painted Wood and Hide Drum with period percussion beater with wrapped leather head.
This outstanding, early 20th century Sioux Parfleche Drum measures approx. 8 1/2” in diameter and 4 3/8” deep. It features a thick, parfleche heads on both the top and bottom sides and a hand carved, wood frame featuring original red and blue pigment surface colors. The heads are stretched... and fixed in place using thick, sinew strips in the typical Plains Indian style. The design leads us to believe that this Drum is of Sioux origin although it may be from another of the Plains Tribes. The beater measures approx. 9 3/4” long and retains its original, soft, brain tanned leather wrapped and cushioned head. The sound of beater on drum is beautiful!!
The Drum heads are taunt and the sound is rich. While there are some light surface scratches and light age toning to the drum heads and the wooden frame there is no significant no damage or repairs of any kind. The sinew handle strap is present but broken as can be seen in the scans below. The Mallet is also very well preserved with some surface wear to the original yellow pigment on the surface of the hand carved wood handle.
The term “parfleche” was first coined by the French fur traders and derived from the French word “parer” meaning defend and “fleche” meaning arrows, as the hide was tough enough to be used as a shield to deflect an arrow. This massive size Parfleche Envelope likely held graphics that were maps, geographical depictions such as rivers and mountains, or symbols that told the history of the tribe over the past year. Once the parfleche left the family / clan, the story was lost and the parfleche became Indian Art rather than a meaningful storyteller.
The Parfleche Drum offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is not NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Plains / Sioux Pigment Decorated Parfleche Drum crafted in the early 20th century. The Drum comes with our “no questions asked” return privilege and our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. It is guaranteed to be deemed authentic, original and as described by any qualified third party authentication service.
This very rare and wonderful, ca1910’s Native American Plains Indian Parfleche Hide and Wood, Paint Decorated Drum and Beater is in excellent condition. As stated above, there is no damage or repairs of any kind other than the break in the sinew strap handle. The sound of the Drum is deep and rich and beautiful!! Please see the numerous scans below for a good representation of the outstanding form and the condition of this wonderful Plains Indian Drum.
