Mid 19th century sampler by Elizabeth Mousley - 1853. Worked in black silk on a soft cotton gauze, yhis sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the gauze are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the lower section contains Elizabeth's name, the date of 1853 and her place of residence - Tamworth - which has a heart to its left and right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a narrow zigzag b...order.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some visible glue residue around the edges. The black of the thread is good with general bleeding throughout, some areas more pronounced than others. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colour would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of old paper and glue on the corners of the gauze from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few small areas of damage in the upper right quadrant. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. Measures 10 1/4" x 13" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
