Here we have a late Victorian/early 20th Century incandescent mantle lamp.
The lamp was purchased in Lille, France, I believe the Regina alcohol vapour burner to be original to the lamp, a filler cap on a glass fount is quite rare, this suggests originality, due to the fact that filling the lamp without one would require removal of the burner, this would upset the fragile upright gas mantle.
The burner using Engelfred's priciple, wicking is stuffed inside the burner, in tubes, a burning pilot light type wick heats the wick that is stuffed inside the burner, a tiny jet releases the vapour and this is mixed with air in a Bunsen, to provide a blue flame for heating the gas mantle to incandescence. I took a video of this actual burner working a few years ago, it can be found on Youtube by searching 'Engelfred burner'.
The shade ring to take 2 5/8" fitting upright gas mantle shades, gas chimney is included.
Corinthian column with onyx or marble stem, cast brass with traces of original gilding.
Dimensions; The lamp measures around 30 1/2" tall (to the top of the chimney), fount is around 6" across, foot is around 5" square.
Condition; appears to be in excellent condition, some scratches to top of cut glass fount, near fill cap from use, nothing really detracting.
Overall, a very attractive and interesting lamp.
## You will need your own upright mantle and upright mantle lamp shade, lamp comes with glass chimney.##
