This is a large fossil beetle, Hydrophilius sp., preserved in tar from the Pleistocene ''La Brea Tar Pits'' of California. This i...mpressive specimen was found DECADES ago, and the location has been closed to collecting for many, many years. Hydrophilius is an uncommon insect from this locality - Cybister is more common from the Tar Pits. This distinct beetle is very well preserved in a 3-dimensional fashion. The detail is excellent - the reticulation of the wing covers is easily seen. The dark insect contrasts nicely with the surface of the tar matrix, which also contains remains of TWO other beetles and a branch! This is a very cool fossil insect from a classic fossil site - what a conversation piece!
