5 WWI letters sent from Captain Smith, Supply Officer 109 Sanitation Train, Field Hospital Section, Camp Cody to family.
Letters dated -March 24th 1918 - just returned from a five day leave at Santa Fe . . I went up to take the Scottish Rite Degrees in Masonry . ..they kept us busy at the Cathedral for three days and nights . . Big ball for us at the Cathedral . .back at the job again, same old grind . .
March 10th 1918 - had a big Shrine parade in Deming yest...erday after noon . . put on in the Armory by the Shrine from El Paso and Santa Fe . . Al visitors now much have their pictures taken and also be vaccinated before they can enter camp . .
March 30th 1918 - a new order came out this past week that no more leaves or furloughs would be granted except in case of death . . I am anxious to get home before we start across the water . . I heard Wilfred Grover was transferee with a tank outfit . . Am going to attend Knights of Templar service Sunday morning down town at the Tabernacle . . Be glad when the Sanitary Train has orders to move . . Th big German drive doesn’t appear to be a wonderful success, although German Troops are only 45 miles from Paris . . Made my income tax report yesterday . . . There have been many officers all over the country of all ranks up to the very highest who have been dismissed from the service . .
Feb 11th 1918 - I am bunking in my tent and writing letters . . Just returned from the new barber shop across the street in the Ammunition tran. . Mother will remember they started it when she was here. . .sorry to know that Mother has been sick since her return. . . Sand is drifted every where . . I issued a lot of rain coats yesterday . .
March 4th 1918 - I have been down at Div. Hdqts on business most of the morning . . We had a terrible sand storm last Friday. . . . I am slowly getting my Hospital pretty well equipped and ready to move . . .i sent my diamond ring home with Mother, to keep till after the war, I received a very pretty Knights Templar ring to wear in its place . . I fear we won’t leave fro France for several months . .
