This mug was decorated with one of Bucyrus-Erie's incredibly durable hydraulic excavators, which are sadly uncommon today, ever since the Erie plant where they were manufactured was shut down. It's also got a printed replica of a personal message from company executive Richard Vitali.
It's also a bit of a "freak" in glassmaker parlance, due to some extensive manufacturing flaws. Look closely at the photos and you'll see a fine netw...ork of lines. These are not cracks - the outside of the glass is quite smooth. But if you run a finger around the inside of the glass, you can feel a slight catch at each line.
It appears that these may be some sort of manufacturing flow defect, or areas where the glass extruded into cracks in the plunger during the press-manufacturing process. The glass is being sold as-is, flaws and all. Most suitable for display only, as the flow lines certainly point to weak spots in the glass material.
