This is an authentic (NOT a computer scanned reprint), genuine1966 photogravure (also known as héliogravure) from the original negative by the American photographer Alvin Langdon Coburn. In the early part of the 20th century Coburn achieved widespread recognition for his photography and was a close colleague of both Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen. He became the first major photographer to emphasize the visual potential of elevated viewpoints and later made some of the first completely abstract photographs. Coburn became well known for his portraits of important European and American authors, artists and statesmen, including Henri Matisse, Henry James, Auguste Rodin, George Bernard Shaw, Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt and Yeats. Today Alvin Langdon Coburn photographs are held in numerous important collections throughout the world. ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravureis an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copperplate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made bypressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate whichhas been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with theactual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched platecombined with a fine "honeycomb" screen controls the amount of ink tobe transferred to the paper at any given point in direct proportion tothe variation of tone in the original image. The result is a truecontinuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditionalsilver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph.Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicatelyrendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographicprint making.
