This is an authentic (NOT a computer scanned reprint), genuine1966 photogravure (also known as héliogravure) from the original negative by the American photographer Alvin Langdon Coburn. In the early part of the 20th century Coburn achieved widespread recognition for his photography and was a close colleague of both Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen. He became the first major photographer to emphasize the visual potential of elevated viewpoints and later made some of the first completely abstract photographs. Coburn became well known for his portraits of important European and American authors, artists and statesmen, including Henri Matisse, Henry James, Auguste Rodin, George Bernard Shaw, Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt and Yeats. Today Alvin Langdon Coburn photographs are held in numerous important collections throughout the world. Whether you collect vintage photogravure prints or are simply looking for extraordinary home or business decor, this atmospheric photogravure will frame and display beautifully! This photogravure plate is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. Under magnification this plate shows a tight "honeycomb" cell structure, uniform pressing of ink and a wide range of tone - all indicative of a quality sheet fed gravure print. The watermark word "Finephoto" does not appear on the actual print. We list beautiful original vintage photographs, photogravures and antique prints everyday!  For more vintage Brassai prints & other Historic Photographic Collections please Click Here To Visit Our Ebay Store where you can search our World Class Selection of authentic vintage prints by photographer or subject.

ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE:  Photogravureis an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copperplate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made bypressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate whichhas been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with theactual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched platecombined with a fine "honeycomb" screen controls the amount of ink tobe transferred to the paper at any given point in direct proportion tothe variation of tone in the original image. The result is a truecontinuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditionalsilver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph.Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicatelyrendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographicprint making. In the early to mid 1900's photogravure was selected(when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing andportfolio projects, but due to it's significant expense and labor, theprocess is rarely seen today. FromMan Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of theworld's most renown photographic masters have published their images inthe rich photogravure process.
