WW2 Cold War 1957 Photo Unit Disney RCAF Royal Canadian Air Force Patch Badge
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:16064027 |
Up for auction is one of my favorite badges from my personal collection, the #1 Photo Unit R.C.A.F. "30 Terra" Crest. This large 7 inch plus crest/patch was purchased from the Veterans family, and included his named unit photo. The patc...h is beautiful, with excellent quality detailing, a nice aged patina and near mint condition. The badge depicts a dog holding a early camera with flash attached in center, between two large yellow Air Force wings. The lower scroll reads "Terra 30 R.C.A.F" in blue and red, with a green neon stitched border on white. Reverse has solid black backing, although it was likely produced (like many high quality badges of the WW2 and the Cold War) by Crest Craft of Saskatoon.
Interestingly, the design may have been inspired by the 1955 Disney Movie "Lady and the Tramp", as this patch was produced a year or two afterwards. Earlier Canadian/American WW2 patches often were inspired by colorful Disney or Warner Brothers Characters.
The badge includes the veterans group photo, which has a pen mark in the centre of his image (please see photos.) The reverse is thankfully named to "Taylor", with further writing: "C.F.B. Rockcliffe, ONT #1/A Photo Unit Personelle 1957". This would make for an interesting research project!
This is the only badge to this unit I have ever seen. I have had this badge for 10+ years and hope it finds a good home and is put on display!
Some History on Rockcliffe Air Station
In 1918 the Royal Air Force sought a flying field in the Ottawa area for experimental mail flights. A field behind a military rifle range located on the banks of the Ottawa River in Rockcliffe Park, several kilometres downstream from Ottawa was converted to an airstrip and became known as the Rockcliffe Air Station.
After the Canadian Parliament's 1920 Air Regulations came into effect, the Rockcliffe Air Station was chosen as an ideal site for supporting both an air harbour and a flying field. The new air harbour, or airport, opened later in 1920 as the Ottawa Air Station, and was one of the six original airfields opened across Canada by the new Air Board. Major activities conducted by the Air Board at the Ottawa Air Station included military aerial photography for topographic mapping in Canada, air transportation, and aeronautical experimentation. The airport also served as a major centre for early aircraft testing.
I have enjoyed this badge for several years, and hope it goes to a good home! Please see my other auctions for several excellent examples of large R.C.A.F. insignia.
