The 1st Lanarkshire Artillery Volunteers were formed in 1859 as a response to a French invasion threat. The enthusiasm for the Volunteer movement following an invasion scare in 1859 saw the creation of many Rifle, Artillery and Engineer Volunteer Corps composed of part-time soldiers eager to supplement the Regular British Army in time of need.
The six pointed star is historical in nature and was likely used to signify that the blade was manufactured using the Damascus steel method (proved).
