The March of the Three Hundred
A vision of the Maryland Guard as they will appear... when ordered to march to the Wars
Many squares, many squaresMany squares onwardOver the mud and stones Marched the Three Hundred.”Forward the Fifty Third!””Guide left.” “step out!” was heard;Over the mud and stones Marched the Three Hundred.
2”Forward the Maryland Guard!”Nor did they think it hard! No! for the Soldiers knew All the girls wondered;Sitting at windows high, Theirs but to sob and sighTheirs but to catch the eye of the Three Hundred.
3Whiskers to right of them, Whiskers to left of them, Mustaches in front of them Had this Three Hundred. All had their hair in curlsGot up to please the girlsAnd their mustachesWaxed in outrageous twirls Had this Three Hundred
4Straight out the AvenueMarched this determined few.Lord! how their trumpets blew, How their drums thundered!Drum Major very tallWaved his mace over all, Naughty boys very smallCried loud as they could bawl"Look at them whiskers, Bill!Ain’t they just spoons at all This here Three Hundred?”
5Hankerchiefs waved on highWept every lonely eye, Bouquets began to fly All the line blundered.”Guide left!” the Sergeant saidMight as well “dress” they the deadTurned was each gallant headUp to the windows whileEvery eye sought to findSome fair one left behind By the Three Hundred.
6Bright eyes to right of themBright eyes to left of themBright eyes all round themWept as they marched away Handsome Three Hundred. But not a man turned back. No! though they knew the trackUp towards the North would crackNice patent leathers, andLong ere they came againBack from the battle plainAll the wax work would beGone from their whiskers, andAll this fine CompanyKnocked into Apple pie, Here a leg, there an eyeOr an arm wanting, andSweethearts be marriedOr die while they tarriedStill though the Mothers sighedAnd all the Maidens criedStraight out the Avenue Marched the Three Hundred.
7But lest their spirits quailAnd lest their hearts should failLo! a command was given All the world wondered! They from their pockets drewMeerschaum pipes colored throughFilled them and lighted, andStraightaway a cloud they blewHid them from every view. This they marched safely through All the Three Hundred.
8When shall their pipes go out? Then will they right about Much loved Three HundredHonor the march they madeCome! see the next parade Of the Three Hundred.
