IMPERIAL GERMAN NAVY NAVAL KAISERLICHE MARINE SAILOR GROUPING SMS " PELIKAN "
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:16166188 | Country/Region of Manufacture: Germany |
The grouping consists of two picture frames in the shape of life preservers with the name of the ship painted on the rims. The first life preserver has a photo of the Pelikan at berth and the second consists of a photo of the sailor who owned these items. His photo was added likely by himself. I have not attempted to open the back of the frame to... see if his name is on the back of the photo. It more than likely is but I did not want to damage the item. His cap tally clearly denotes he is a sailor serving on the "Pelikan". These types of souvenirs were available to sailors at the time to commemorate their service in the Kaiserliche Marine. They were quite popular among sailors and their families. The frames measures 4 3/4" in diameter. Glass protects the photographs. Four thin fabric bands appear around the frames. A thin rope is threaded around the frames which could serve as a hanger at the frames top. These were often hung on a wall or simply displayed as a decorative piece. The third item is a RPPC of the SMS "Pelikan".
The SMS "Pelikan" was a mine layer during WW1 laying mine defensives around U-boat anchorages along the German Bight. After WW1 she was the mother ship for mine clearing vehicles. The ship was scrapped in 1921.
Please note: I only ship to the continental US and Alaska.
