Original US Navy Dewey Medal, with USS Baltimore reverse, officially named on the rim “Frederick L. Anderson, Apprentice 2nd Class”. Themedal has the proper pin and catch and is correct in all other details. Theribbon is probably an old replacement. It’s slightly tattered and is faded onthe obverse. According to his Pennsylvania state veteran’s compensat...ionapplication, Frederick Leslie Anderson was born in New York City on July 4, 1880. He joined the US Navy in early 1897 and served on the USS Baltimore fromMarch, 1898 to January, 1900. He then served on the USS Brooklyn and USS Oregonuntil he was honorably discharged in 1901. He later had WWI service as anEnsign in the USNRF. Anderson died in 1962 and is buried at the Los AngelesNational Cemetery in Westwood. The protected cruiser, USS Baltimore (Cruiser #3), wascommissioned on January 7, 1890, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Assigned as flagship to the North AtlanticSquadron, she conveyed the remains of the inventor John Ericsson from New Yorkto Stockholm, Sweden, following his death. Joining the South Pacific Squadron in April 1891, she protectedAmericans during the Chilean revolution and later served as the flagship ofAsiatic Station from 1893 until placed out of commission three-yearslater. Recommissioned in October 1897, Baltimore sailed to Hawaii, where she remained until the Spanish-American Warin April 1898, taking part in the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1. Returning to New York two years later, shewas placed out of commission until May 1903.
