Civil War soldier's letter, 3 pgs., approx. 4-5/8" x 7-5/8", datelined "Camp near Helena, Sabbath afternoon, Oct. 12, 62" from Theodore Hyde, 9th Regt. Iowa Infantry, to his Parents.
The writer of the letter, Theodore Hyde, was an 18 year old from Quasqueton, Iowa when he was mustered into Co. C, 9th Iowa Infantry on Sept. 25, 1861. He was killed at the Battle of Missionary Ridge on Nov. 25, 1863.
Good content, including a page on which he h...as hand-drawn the insignia of 13 insignia of various ranks, with a numbered key identifying each.

It is with pleasure that I received your...letters enclosing those little necessaries which with the others were very acceptable. It is a very pleasant Sabbath. We had a very good sermon this forenoon. The Chaplin of the 34th Indiana preached...
While I write, I have the likenesses of Anna & Brother and Father lying beside me and pasted and pasted inside of my Testament....I am writing under what would sound strange to you - but does not to me - an almost steady firing around us; the Cavalry discharging their guns. They have just come back from a scout (yes, a fight too). Our Cavalry has been fighting all day today, and part of yesterday; several killed and wounded. I should not be surprised if we were not called out tomorrow...
