American naval officer and explorer Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957) inscribed (to Albany historian Cuyler Reynolds) and signed (twice) this first edition of his book, Skyward, which tells of his “thrilling adventures, his North Pole and Trans-Atlantic Flights, together with his plans for conquering the Antarctic by air.”
Gilt-stamped blue cloth over boards; illustrated end papers; photogravure frontispiece portrait of Byrd; pp. (xv), 359; illustrated with several half-tone plates. ...9” x 6”. Published by G. P. Putnam's Sons in New York and London. Signed and inscribed by Byrd on a front fly leaf and also signed on one of the plates. Also signed by aviator Glenn Curtiss ("appreciating his accomplishments May 30, 1930") and Eagle Scout Paul A. Siple, who accompanied Byrd on two Antarctic expeditions.
Richard E. Byrd is remembered for his aircraft expeditions which he declared were the first to reach the North and South Poles by air, though his claim of ever having reached the North Pole is disputed. Byrd was also a recipient of the Medal of Honor.
Condition: Covers lightly stained, corners and spine ends bumped and lightly worn, rubbing along spine, previous owner’s name/address label on front and rear paste-downs, front hinge slightly cracked, some pages uncut, preserved in a clear mylar jacket. Overall, the book is in good condition with clear, bold signatures.
