ARTIE SHAW - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 10/05/1952 - HFSID 308262

ARTIE SHAW
While working on his second book and his seventh marriage, Shaw writes to friend and fellow band leader Bob Wilson. (The books worked out well.)
Typed Letter: "Artie", 1 page, 7¼x10½. No place, 1952 October 5. To "Dear Bob" [Wilson], Honolulu, T. H. [Territory of Haw...aii], in full: "I enjoyed our letter about my book and was agreeably reminded of the Charles Morgan reference to books in general. The biggest kick, though, was the Cozy Cole quote which - you may be sure - is going to find its way into print as soon as I can find a place to use it in the book I'm now working on - a fictional book entitled 'The Hard and Wiry Line', taken by the way, from a William Blake quotation dealing with rectitude and certainty in the actions and intentions, to use Blake's own words. Anyway, thanks for telling me about Cozy, among other things. Claude finally showed up again, after a number of years, and he and Helen were up for a couple of days. Before that, while she was on her way east with the car, Claude himself spent a weekend with Doris and me. We had lots of fun going back over old times and laughing at ourselves and all the rest of it. We spoke of you too and I showed him your letter, which he got a kick out of reading too. Doris and I are thinking quite seriously of trying to arrange a trip down your way sometime this winter, possibly January or February or thereabouts. If o I will of course write and let you know beforehand. In any even you'll be hearing from me occasionally - if not in letters, at least in other books which may take up so much time in writing that I won't find time to write, if that's clear enough. Take it slow, Bob. It's actually the best pace today when everyone seems to be in the biggest possible rush to get his head knocked off. The way things look now, possibly it will turn out that the slow will inherit the earth. The meek don't seem to be doing so well at the moment! As every". Accompanied by original mailing envelope. Bandleader Artie Shaw (1910-2004), born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky, was also an accomplished jazz clarinetist, composer and writer. During the Swing Era, Shaw, the chief rival of Benny Goodman, and his band had a number of hits, including "Begin the Beguine" (1938), "Lady Be Good" and "Frenesi", and Shaw was the first white bandleader to hire a Black female lead singer - Billie Holiday. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Shaw appeared in two feature films, Artie Shaw's Class in Swing (1939) and Second Chorus (1940), and he wrote songs for the Marx Brothers' film, The Big Store (1941) as well as for Second Chorus. Enlisting in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Shaw and his band played for Navy personnel in the Pacific Theatre for 18 months. In 1954, Shaw "retired" from playing the clarinet to concentrate on writing semi-autobiographical non-fiction, but he came out of retirement several times, including reorganizing a new Artie Shaw Band (1981, with Dick Johnson as band leader and soloist; Shaw would make guest conducting appearances) and appearing as a guest star on several TV shows, from What's My Line? (1950) to Police Woman (1975) as well as making several appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1971-1972. Married eight times, his wives included Elizabeth "Betty" Kern, the daughter of songwriter Jerome Kern, and actresses Lana Turner (February-September 1940), Ava Gardner (1945-1946) and Evelyn Keyes (1957-1985; his longest marriage, but Shaw said they lived separate lives much of the time). When he wrote this letter, Shaw was newly married to his seventh wife, actress Doris Dowling (1952-1956); the mother of one of his two sons. When he wrote this letter, Shaw had just published the first of his several boos, an autobiography titled The Trouble with Cinderella. ("Nobody ever lives happily ever after, " Shaw believed.) Shortly before his death in 2004, Shaw received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. This letter is from the personal collection of noted Big Band-era musician Bob Wilson. Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
