CIVIL WAR ELEY TIN OF PISTOL CAPS, PROBABLE CS USE

This is a tinof imported pistol caps that was meant to hold percussion caps for a Civil War pistol or revolver! The tin measures 1-1/2" across with no dents but does show field use. It isjapanned and fits tight.Japanning is a method ofvarnishing a surface, such as wood, metal, or glass, to obtain a durable, lustrous finish and to inhibit rust. Japanning varnishes usually have a resinbase and are colored by mineral and other pigments.These were produced by thefamous British cap and... gun maker, ELEY,  of LONDON. It is a universal cap designed to fit most all percussion revolversand pistols.SinceSpringfield Arms, Colt, Remington and other US based firms werepumping out these little necessities for Union weapons this British importwas most likely destined for Confederate issue.Eitherway, since these universally fit most handguns this is a "must have" todisplay with your pistol or accouterments.
