Great lot of material here! Includes original 1863 Confederate solder letter with the envelop; a book, signed by the author, providing details about this soldier and his family; and a letter from 1932 providing provenance for the Civil War letter. (There are 12 photos on this listing - be sure to see each one and use Ebay's zoom feature as needed).
Included are:
1.&nbs...p; Original Confederate Soldier letter with May 11, 1863 Richmond, VA postmark and (what I assume) is a 10 cent due stamp. This letter is written by "Ned" Bayol, whose full name was Francis Edward Bayol. It was written to his mother, and written at "Grace Church, Apr 10th, /63"
Ned - along with his brother, Jules Honore Bayol, joined the "Greensboro Guard" group of the Confederate Army in 1861. Their Father, Edward Bayol had joined the Guard in 1835. Ned survived the war; his brother Jules was shot and killed in July 1862.
The letter is in good shape overall. The ink has faded so takes some concentration to read. It is written on a piece of paper which originally was about 10 x 7.5" and folded in half - making four pages of writing. There are two additional folds to fit in the 5.5 x 3.25" envelop.
2. A book, GUARDING GREENSBORO, signed by the author, G. Ward Hubbs in 2006. This book documents the history of the Greensboro, Alabama Guards. Subtitled "A Confederate Company in the Making of a Southern Community", it includes a photo of Ned Bayol on the cover (and on page 116) and documents the history of this military unit which has pre-war origins
The book is a first edition, published in 2003. 325 pages. In great condition.
3. An "Airmail, Special Delivery" letter from 1932, written from a brother, Ed Crabb, (in Oklahoma) to his sister in Florida, Elizabeth Crabb.. This letter was created long after Ned Bayol had died of course, but it provides a "link" between me and the Civil War letter. I am currently selling some materials for a friend of mine from the "Crabb" estate - which included both of these letters. In this letter, the brother is congratulating his sister on an impeding marriage to a "Bayol". For some reason the first name of the husband-to-be has been manually cut out of the letter. So apparently one of Ned Bayol's desendents introduced the Civil War letter into the Crabb family.
Other than these cut-outs, the letter is in good shape; the envelop was opened at one end, and has some creases and soiling. It includes 5 post-marks.
In all, a very nice group of materials that provides a much more complete story than the typical civil war letter.
