The US Marine Corps has always prided itself on being "first to fight", and Marine units attached to the Army's 2nd Infantry Division were rushed to France to help blunt the great German Spring Offensive of 1918. They stopped the Germans cold at Belleau Wood, and then began to turn the tide at Chateau-Thierry. This USMC Marine US WW1 M-1912 KHAKI COTTON SUMMER TUNIC is in fair condition, with some light fraying to the top edge of the back collar, a small dent to the left shoulder s...trap button, a small tear in the top left front placket, the name "F.L. FOSTER" stamped in black at each side of the interior middle front placket, next to the name "F FOSTER" hand marked in red, and with moderate overall fading, brownish soiling, and age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the tunic is in fair shape, with no other damage to the tough khaki 100% cotton construction. Most interestingly, it boasts the classic single exposed button flap closure pleated chest pockets, sports all of the original USMC eagle, globe, and anchor embossed darkened bronze buttons throughout, and carries the initials "EHG" hand marked in black at the interior back collar, along with the name "E.H. GUNTHER" hand marked in brown at the interior right collar. Edmund H. Gunther enlisted in the US Marines on June 4, 1918, was being held as a prisoner at the Naval Prison at Parris Island by August, and then served in the Band School Detachment and the Athletic Department at Parris Island in 1919, followed by 3 years of duty in the Eastern Reserve Division in Philadelphia, PA, where he last appears on the Marine Corps muster rolls in April 1922. It features pointed cuffs, chest darts, and a fully functional dual brass "hook and eye" neck closure at the short "standing" collar, and is an honest example of a very rare, original USMC Marine US WW1 M-1912 KHAKI COTTON SUMMER TUNIC.
