Information:
Reference Number: Avaluer:16370052Country/Region of Manufacture: Barbados
Original Description:
A scarce example of a button used by Thomas Porter a well known and prolific slave trader and auctioneer based in Barbados as well as other West Indies Islands. Porter imported vast numbers of slaves from Africa to the West Indies. After reeducating them to the realities of slavery and breaking their will to escape, he brought them to the United States and sold them in slave markets, particularly in Charleston, South Carolina.  Buttons like this were attached to the slaves clothin...g and shackles to advertise that they were Thomas Porter trained and imported slaves.  A very fine example of an excavated 1 piece copper/brass button of the 1790-1820 era.  Backmark appears to read "(crown) BEST QUALITY".  An excavated button with dark patina. Button has full straight shank and has a good full rim.  Button measures 19.01mm.  See photos for condition details. All buttons are guaranteed to be original and of the period indicated in the description. Nearly all buttons listed on Ebay will have a $9.99 starting bid, with no reserve ever, regardless of the buttons value.  We will always combine shipping for multiple purchases.  If you do make multiple purchases, please request an invoice for the total cost of your purchases including combined shipping before making payment.  Please see our other listings of military buttons as well as other fine antique and collectible items.  Best of luck with your bids!omp234
