The Greek Revival period began here in America first in seen architecture and later in home furnishings like the mirror in this listing. The ancient Greek's were known for their strong, sturdy, highly decorated architecture the world over and are part of Greek mythology as wel...l. Revivalist's used tall Greek Corinthian pillars or fluted columns that are usually slimmer and taller than other Greek pillars made from marble, in ancient times, and in wood on the framing of this marvelous antique mirror. The capital is a square slab on top of a pillar and above this is sprouting acanthus leaves symbolizing immortality as original Greek buildings in ancient times, like the Parthenon, were built to last forever. Below the tall fluted columns is the plinth or the base that holds the pillar in place. Pillars or columns help support a building by holding the entrance to the building in place. Bank buildings, like the US Treasury building in Washington DC, public office buildings in cities and states around the country, our nations capitol building also in Washington DC, and many other public buildings and homes during the Greek Revival Period are still standing today.Artistically, this mirror shows many detailed carvings on it, some fine, detailed, hand painting or stenciling on a navy blue background on the pillars on either side of the mirror in between, the same above and below the piece too. The gilt work is extraordinary and gilt paint is made from 24K gold leaf that is mixed with oil to form gilt or gold paint used on wood, like the mirror in this listing, metal, plaster, fine china, and oil paintings. The Greek Revivalist mirror in this listing meets all of the qualifications for a Greek Revivalist period piece and it's doorway is like a mirror to look into. It is designed like a real Greek building with its two fluted Corinthian pillars or columns on either side of the mirror in the middle, with acanthus leaves flowing out onto them just above the capitals, and the two pillars are held in place by a plinth or base on either side of the mirror. The mirror measures 13 3/4" Tall X 12 1/2" wide X 1 1/2" deep, and it is in very good condition and the mirror has been replaced with a brand new one. This mirror can hang on a wall or stand up on a shelf with a small wire anchor so that it won't fall forward onto your shelf.Good luck! Any questions? Email me right away!
