Description: Autograph Letter Signed "CG Gordon" while newly appointed Governor of the Sudan, 1 page, tall 8 vo, Cairo February 17, 1877 (Catalog mistakenly dates letter as Feb 2, 1877).
Writing home to England to a Mr GIbbs (probably in the Foreign Office) upon his return to the Sudan, Gordon, proud of his accomplishments and his new appointment, quickly writes:
"The firman is signed. H(is) H(ighness) has giv...en me the old province of Equator, the whole of Soudan, and the littorl of Red Sea. Noone could be invested with greated power. Finance &c are all in my hands, and in a word, I am astounded at the vast concession. It will be my fault now if slavery does not cease, but of course I need time..."
This letter is also referenced in a book called "the Life of Sir John Fowler, Engineer, Bart., K.C.M.G. etc by THomas Mackay", with the notation that "a copy of which is among Sir John Fowlers papers."
Smythe catalog continues "undoubtedly a letter that was telegraphed home, it is marked Copy at head, with file docket on verson in Gordon's hand incorporating a second signature "Letter to Mr Gibbs / from Col Gordon"
Affixed to the top margin are 2 small English newspaper articles (annotated in Gordon's hand with one partly detached), the first reporting receipt of a telegram from "Colonel Gordon under date Cairo, the 17th instant" relating the contents of this letter and the second reporting Gordon Pasha's appointment as Governor.
