Vintage Surgeon's Medical Trephine / Skull Drill - TrepanningPracticed for at least the past 4000 years, trepanning is the medical process of drilling holes into the human skull to relieve pressure on the brain, lift a compression fracture of the skull or remove a blood clot on the brain. Earliest uses may have included facilitating the entrance and exit of spirits and demons or simply relieving headaches. For all these purposes, the surgical tool of choice in recent c...enturies has been the Trephine, a "T" handled hand drill with a bit not unlike a carpenter's plug cutter. Here is a fine example from the late 19th or early 20th century that has seen little use and could be put right to work (just kidding). It is heavily nickel plated with the plating remaining mostly intact. The 5/8" diameter blade is very sharp showing no sign of use. My Grandfather, who practiced medicine from the 1870's through the 1920's, had a trephine that was quite similar to this one. And this style was apparently used extensively through the immediate post Civil War era. Even if you are not contemplating neurosurgery (either as a patient or a practitioner), this tool is a must collectible! Equally at home in the Hand Drill section of a collection of Antique Carpenters Tools or in the Civil War section of a Medical Instruments Collection, this FINE Old Trephine is a guaranteed conversation starter!!
