This item is a token or production medal from the Bartel's Brewing Co. that was located in Edwardsville, PA. That brewery was closed in 1968 and production of their products was afterward continued by Lion Brewery in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The item is 26 mm in diameter made a brass and bears a # 4 as shown in the photograph. It is a part of a collected accumulation by original owners of the Edwardsville brewery that I believe was sold to a "vest pocket" dealer shortly after its closing in t...he late 60's or 70's. I purchased the collection within the last 6 months from that deal.
Dr. Herman Aqua lists 5 varieties of these tokens in his PA Merchant's book. 4 that are number "1" and 1 that is a "2". He listed each as rarities R-5 or 9 to 20 known to him. I believe these tokens may have been used in the brewing process or accounting of grain and may not have been truly merchant tokens. The collection contains a number of higher number token than "1" and "2" that are very limited in count and may be considered R-6's and R-7's. There is also a number of varieties considering diameters, thickness and position or size of the assigned number. I may consider listing them on EBAY or selling the collection en toto. I am unaware of numbers other than 1 and 2 being listed for internet sales. PLEASE consider that when bidding.
Any of my listed EBAY items may be personally viewed at Heritage Galleries, 52 Carr Avenue, Dallas, PA during normal business hours (Tuesday thru Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM) or call in advance (570) 674-2848.This item will have free shipping, may be picked up and is exempt from PA 6% sales tax.Presently this listing is restricted to a United States EBAY listing and sale.
