CHAUX-DE-FONDS
SWITZERLAND  UNIQUE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF TIMEPIECE
VERY BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE WATCH CA 1950’s
VERY BEAUTIFUL MECHANICAL WORK

Add in theright touch this extra fine men’s STERLINGSILVER curved Rectangular Art DeCo timepiece, made by the GIRARD PERREGAUX, a larger size STERLING SILVERTanke model – Curvedand Long that dates to ca 1950’s. Girard-Perregaux watch history: The history of this prestigious Swiss manufacturer canbe traced back to Jean-Francois Bautte, the famous Geneva watchmaker. Thoughorphaned at a very young age, the young man confronted life with determination. In 1791, by the time he wasnineteen, Jean-Francois Bautte had learnt several trades, acquired theeducation which his modest background had denied him, and begun making hisfirst watches. It would not be long before his name became familiar to theroyal courts of Europe. A master watchmaker ofrare talent, Jean-Francois Bautte was also an astute "industrialist"and businessman with a brilliant, imaginative and generous character. He iscredited with creating the first genuine ultra-thin watches and the trulyvisionary concept of the Manufactory as a producer of high-quality timepieces. Unfortunately, Jean-Francois Bautte did not have asuccessor or heir to take over his company when he retired. The problem of whatto do with the company was quickly solved when a merger was arranged withanother watch manufacturer. In 1854, Constantin Girard married Marie Perregaux. As both came fromwatchmaking backgrounds, it seemed perfectly natural to use both names whenthey formed their own company. So it was that the Girard-Perregaux brand was born, in 1856. More than just a famous watchmaker, Constantin Girardwas also a patriot committed to the republican cause and always ready to devotetime and energy to his beloved town of La Chaux-de-Fonds. Only a few years were needed toestablish a reputation that spread as far as the New World. His technical and aesthetic masterpiece, the "Tourbillon Sous Trois Pointsd'Or" (translation: Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges), wasunquestionably the greatest achievement of a life largely devoted to theresearch and development of the art of watchmaking. This amazing pocket watchwon Girard-Perregaux two gold medals at the Paris Universal Exhibitions in 1867 and 1889, and is considered one of the most desirable mechanical watches ever made. The tradition of innovation initiated by Jean FrancoisBautte has been perpetuated to the present day by Girard Perregaux. Throughoutits long history, the Manufactory has made a number of exciting and innovativecontributions to the world of watchmaking. Foremost among these is the conceptof the wristwatch. Although a few pocket watches had already been modified tobe worn on the wrist, Girard-Perregaux was the first watchmaker to produce thiskind of timepiece in a series, around 1880. In addition, Girard Perregaux has developed severalrevolutionary movements, the most notable of which have been the Gyromatic, thehigh-frequency mechanical movement that has become collectible in their ownright, as well as the quartz movement, whose frequency of 32, 768 Hertz hasbecome the universally accepted standard. In fact, it was Girard-Perregaux'sinnovations in the realm of quartz timekeeping that allowed it to survive theSwiss watch industry's economic crisis during the 1970's and 1980's.This gorgeous, designed ART DECO men’swatch is a very handsome specimen has a BLACK enameled STEEL dial with steel Roman numerals. It featuring a 60 minute checkered outer track border and goldsteel hands. The dial is signed GIRARD PERREGAUX– CHAUX DE FONDS below the XII. The case is STERLING SILVER and is in great condition, asare the lugs that are solid and secure. The winding crown is gently domed andin excellent shape, operating smoothly. The new BLACK dialand the new STERLING SILVER casehave been professionally updated, and now are in excellent condition. Turning the watch over I seethat the back lid is in excellent condition.   Peeking inside I discover aclean FULLY 17 JEWELS, manual wind nickel finished high-grade mechanism withGOLD WHEELS & BI-METALLIC COMPENSATEDBALANCE. The number of jewels used in watchmovements increased over the last 150 years as jewelling grew less expensiveand watches grew more accurate. The only bearings that really need to bejeweled in a watch are the ones in the going train - the gear train thattransmits force from the mainspring barrel to the balance wheel - since onlythey are constantly under force from the mainspring. The wheels that turn thehands (the motion work) and the calendar wheels are not under load, while theones that wind the mainspring (the keyless work) are used very seldom, so theydo not wear significantly. Friction has the greatest effect in the wheels thatmove the fastest, so they benefit most from jewelling. So the first mechanismto be jeweled in watches was the balance wheel pivots, followed by theescapement. As more jeweled bearings were added, they were applied to slowermoving wheels, and jewelling progressed up the going train toward the barrel. A 17 jewel watch has every bearing fromthe balance wheel to the mainspring barrel jeweled, so it was considered a 'fully jeweled' watch. The movement is signed GIRARD-PERREGAUX & Co – SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS– SWISS – UNADJUSTED. Also issigned themovement serial number #52-3175. This beautiful wristwatch has the ORIGINAL movement in anexcellent status which was very well saved, considering age of this watch. Mechanism has been recently serviced toensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping great, accurate time.It is fitted on a new 20mm blackalligator style genuine leather strap with Stainless steel buckle that isvintage style and goes great with this wonderful watch. This beautifully preserved timepiecemeasures 44mm end to end and 31mm in width (34mm with crown). Thisbeautiful and fully restored Art DeCo men’s watch winds and sets smoothly whilekeeping accurate time.Because of the vintage nature of the watchI cannot guarantee its absolute time keeping accuracy even if they are in goodrunning condition and in some rare occasions may require additional adjustment.Always an EXTRA FINE watches at a no Reserve Price!!!If you like rare, antique, unique and collectible vintage wristwatches or pocket watches (or just enjoy learning about all the different watch makers and models) I suggest you bookmark this page or add me to your "Favorite Sellers" list. I always have beautiful pristine timepieces for sale ending Monday. Now on eBay for 10 Years! Recommendations for the owner of vintage watches: - All Antique watches are mechanical. Many repairs will not be cheap, as most likely they will require replacement of non-standard parts (unlike most late model watches).
 - Antique watches should not be beaten or dropped - because repairs may be expensive.
 - Antique watches are generally NOT waterproof. This is because waterproofing was not in general production until the middle of the 20th century for most watches. Therefore you should protect your antique watch from exposure to moisture.
 - If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust.
 - If your watch becomes wet with any kind of salt water you should immediately immerse or spray your watch with fresh (no-salt) water to remove all the salt from the works before drying the watch completely. Any salt left in the watch will combine with moisture in the air to rust metal components of the movement, case etc.
 - Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard.
 - When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement.
 - If you must adjust counter-clockwise make it for small adjustments only (i.e. for minutes, NOT hours).
 - Be careful and gentle when adjusting the movement speed (faster or slower). Don't make sharp movements, and don't touch other components in the movement especially the pendulum mechanism.
 - Every 2-3 years it is necessary to service and oil vintage watches.
 - If the watch is dirty - allow the watch to run down, don't wind it again until you have it serviced by a qualified watch repair expert. Dust will absorb and remove important lubricants and cause the movement pieces to wear down.
 - To clean the case, dial and crystal you should use a cloth that does NOT leave fibers as these may get caught up in the movement. Check with your Watch repair expert to get an appropriate cloth.
 - Keep your antiques watch away from magnets. Strong magnetic fields may affect the accuracy of your watch since some vintage watches were made with iron based components in the movement.
 - Most Cases and Covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed.
 - Antique watches generally experience an error of up to 5-7 minutes a day. Any accuracy of +- 5 minutes is very good.
