For those who grew up buying songs piecemeal on iTunes, you can'timagine how terrible it is to have an LP with a mix of wonderful and terriblesongs, interspersed. The wonderful songs are, ofcourse, by John Lennon, in a comeback that includes some of the best solo songshe ever wrote, including (Just Like) Starting Over and Beautiful Boy. Lennon'ssongs are relaxed, confident, tuneful, and likable. Then there's Yoko, atalented conceptual artist who is better known for being a terriblesinger-songwriter who combined derivative melodies with trite lyrics and thensang them in weak and nasal tones. This album apparently beganwhen Lennon played a new song he'd written to Yoko (I'm Losing You) and shedecided to write I'm Moving On in return, which was pretty much a rip-off ofI'm Losing You. Her best song, the fun I'mYour Angel, is also a rip off; she was sued by the owners of Makin' Whoopee.She was apparently warned beforehand that this might happen and went ahead andrecorded it anyway. Her second best song, Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him, is a surprisingly tolerable New Wave number, and if she'd been held to two orthree of her best pieces she actually wouldn't have caused that much damage tothe album, even if her style didn't mesh with Lennon's. Back in the days of vinyl, you would have to simply get up every three minutes and move the needle if youdidn't want to suffer through Yoko's songs. And yeah, I did know a weird artsygirl who said she skipped over the Lennon songs to listen to the Yoko ones, butshe also once defended purposely tedious art videos by saying that boredom wasa worthy emotion to elicit from your audience, so I can't say her opinion meantmuch to me. The sad thing is, Lennon hadmore songs, which were left unpolished and released posthumously on Milk andHoney (alongside - sigh - more Yoko). Had he worked on those songs and put themon Double Fantasy he could have had arguably the best album of his solo career.Now the best you can do is to buy the digital Lennon songs from his last twoalbums and make a playlist out of them, giving a very rough approximation ofthe album he would have released if he wasn't too much in love to realize whatan untalented musician Yoko was.
