It is a RARE and wonderful depiction of Onibaba Adachigahara - a legendary demon-hag, a cannibalistic witch or goblin often depicted with a sword or a large kitchen knife preying over young children or maidens - according to folklore this creature took shape of an old woman with grotesque face and a long hair, wearing a necklace made of human teeth and feeding solely on human flesh.<...br>The large Okimono is expertly carved from a single, solid, heavy piece of wood, covered with lacquer (the long sword's blade is the only added part)
Great detail of the fearsome facial features and teeth, eyes are inlayed with black horn - it is wearing woven straw boots and holding a long sword, in one hand and the scabbard, in the other.
It is artist-signed with Japanese characters, on the bottom of the right leg - signature reads 'MASA NORI' - other leg is drilled at the bottom to allow pegging to a stand
The statue comes on a carved wood base / stand, decorated with gold lacquer and inset with a hard-stone ball at the center
