This is a stunning and very rare Aboriginal Maireener iridescent shell necklace. The shells have a deep pink base color with peacock and purple overtones for a very dynamic color display which pictures can't do justice, it is much more intense in person. The necklace measures over 25 inches long closing with a barrel clasp. The shells measure about 6-8mm long and are in good vintage condition with only a couple of minor holes or blemishes that do not distract at all and are only mentio...ned for accuracy.
Aboriginal women would pierce each shell with atool made from a jawbone and sharpened lower incisor of a kangaroo or wallaby.The shells were then threaded on kangaroo tail sinews or on string made fromnatural fibres, smoked over a fire, and rubbed in grass to remove their outercoating and reveal the pearly surface. The shells were later polished withpenguin or muttonbird oil.Europeancolonisation introduced new tools and materials, including acids such asvinegar to clean the shells and steel punches to hole them. Needles and cottonor synthetic thread enabled the women to incorporate smaller shells intoincreasingly intricate designs.
