The backside tang stam...p IA SILBER-STAHL means Silver Steel. The IA is actually 1A represented by the Roman Numeral I for the Ia. Group 1a. on older periodic tables (1865-1871) included Silver and alkali metals. Then Silver was moved to group 1 and now appears in group 11 of a modern periodic chart. While some branded razors that carry the "Ia.STEEL" tang stamp may also display "SILVER STEEL" etching on the blade this one does not. Silver Steel contains a high volume of carbon (one of the highest carbon contents of all tool steels). Manufacturers use carbon to increase the strength and durability of the steel. While I have not found any direct reference explaining why Ia was used on the tang stamp it stands to reason that this was a reference to the group of elements having silver like properties and which before 1869 also included silver. It would have been the best way to fit such a reference on the tang as using Ag would not be accurate since there is no actual silver in silver steel.
Some other manufacturers known to have produced straight razors that display some reference to silver steel include Dovo, Boker, Thiers-Issard, Collins, Parker and many others that marketed products as being made with Sheffield Steel or Swedish Steel.
Silver Steel features very high wear resistance and is known for its ability to hold a sharp edge.
