RARE 19TH C ENGLISH IMPERIAL MOCHAWARE SOFT PASTE 1 PT TANKARD W/SEAWEED DECOR
Item History & Price
DESCRIPTION:This absolutely gorgeous, one pint... English Imperial seaweed decorated cerulean blue, black and mustard-olive banded soft paste mochaware tankard or beer mug, is from the United Kingdom and dates back to the early to mid-19th century and is circa 1820-1855. This is an early antique and is nearly 200 years old and seems to have withstood most of the trials and tribulations that a utilitarian piece of ceramics, such as this beer mug or then referred to as a tankard, would've been subjected to. It has largely escaped the ravages of time and the bawdy and unruly behavior of the local pub. The soft paste mochaware tankard has what appears to be some very faint and minor staining in the soft paste white field above where the unglazed bottom cleated foot would be located on the underside of the tankard. Other than this condition issue and two minor flea-bites to the unglazed foot (one the size of an apple seed and the other the size of a poppy seed) the early-mid 19th century English tankard is in relatively very well preserved overall antique condition, with great repeating seaweed sidewall decoration and highly reflective surfaces. The exterior sidewalls are still glossy and devoid of any stained hairline cracks, noticeable or depreciating stains, chips, cracks or loss. The tankard has no flea-bites or ceramic loss on the upper or lower edges or on the handle. Magnificent. Quite clean for an artifact nearly, if not 200 years old or more. Beautiful and then some. What are you drinking out of? It probably isn't nearly as beautiful as this. The original barware and high style. Haven't you already started your very own 19th century English mochaware collection?
CONDITION:Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
