Description: Extremely rare late 1800’s, wood puzzle box with 1/16 plate size (1 3/8” x 1 5/8”) daguerreotype photo of a bearded young man set into the flat panel under glass piece with interesting border. That opening measures 1 5/8” x 2 ½” and the full size of the panel, all one piece of wood, measures 2 ¼” x 3 3/8” and is 5/16” at thickest part. The other 2 sections contain compartments for specimens or possibly a small ink well or for other reasons with one having a sliding cover. Another feature of the sliding cover is a small metal piece that you can turn to lock the box pieces shut. Not sure how that was installed but it along with parts of the box, all are handmade. In fact, both box sections and their inserts are carved from solid pieces of wood and not joined together. Total outside dimensions are 1 7/8” x 2 ¼” x 3 1/8” and fits tightly together. A true work of art.NO reserve.
