A vintage lantern globe that no doubt was originally clear glass and has been subjected to an irradiation process that has turned it this purple color. It is 4 3/4 inches tall and measures just under 4 inches in diameter at the base and just under 3 1/2 inches diameter at the top. As with many of these early lantern globes there is roughness around the top rim
Glass from this period often contains manganese which was added to make the glass clear. When this glass is expose...d to sunlight it tends to turn the color of the glass to amethyst and when exposed to intense radiation as in a sterilization facility it will often turn the color to a permanent purple color.
