From a New England collection. Scarce early Norwegian decorated wooden stave ale tankard or tutekane with attic dried dark green paint outside, burnt orange interior, and smoke decorated bottom. Birch bindings hold the vertical wooden staves together, along with pegs. This tankard is most likely much older than the 1879 date on one side (family name of Mock? Mack?). We think this item was repainted or personalized in 1879~as was common. Victorian era decoupaged butter...fly on one side with hand painted flowers flanking the date. Simple carved star decoration on handle butt. Staves are in stable condition. Some loss to binding as indicated in photos. Animal nibbling to the end of the spout.
