With a few good sales under my belt on this eBay account, I am going to try a couple quality Native American items heading into the new year! Please see my other listings.
Beautiful little 19th century Ute strike-a-light bag. The bag featur...es a wide array of eccentric red, white, dark blue, greasy yellow, light blue, and pea green beads. The beads appear to be mostly strung on manufactured fibber, however some are strung on gut. The base material of the bag is a combination of Native tanned hide, and salvaged boot leather. Very intact beadwork, and mostly present tin "tinkle" cones. Really a very good example with typical Ute designs.
Interestingly this stike-a-light bag came from a collection of Native American artifacts purchased from a curio shop in Killisnoo Alaska in 1901. Charmingly this Ute fire striker bag is listed as "Beaded Sealskin Purse" in a document made by the former owner listing items purchased from the shop. Alaskan curio shops were notorious for purchasing old Native American goods from across the country and selling them locally, falsely claiming them to be the work of Haida or Tlingit craftsmen. This Ute bag was old in 1901 when it was sold by the curio shop, and would have an origin in Utah or Colorado. Please see the last image for a facsimile of the period curio list included in this auction. Approximately 6 1/2" x 2 3/4"
