Navajo weaver Ofelia Joe of Cove, Arizona wove her Third Phase Chief’s rug in the size 59” wide x47” high. (Ofelia's husband Mike also weaves rugs for us.) The design replicates a traditional Late Classic Period“9-spot” Third Phase chief’s blanket. These colors were handdyed: the authentic natural dye indigoblue (2shades: light as edge cords only- & dark – in the rug &edge cords); and the aniline dyedblack, camel tan, red, darkred& teal. All weft yarn is 100% ...Navajo Churrosheep wool, single ply & mill-spun.The warp is high quality, strong 2-ply, white wool. The edges are finished with 2 x3-ply dark indigoand lightindigo weft selvagecords, the two colors twisted like a barber pole. Both ends have 2 x3-ply redcords (“warp selvages”). Three-ply cords are ~50% stronger thanthe usual 2-ply cords. The end cords are structural cords used to setup the loom, so strength is important in that these 3-ply cords provide a longer lifetime for your rug than 2-ply cords. This rug’swoven density is 9 warps / inch and 28 wefts / inch. One photo shows Native Americans wearing Navajo chief's blankets, wearing blankets and serapes.Note regarding Navajo Churro Sheep wool / yarn: We see ebay sellers claiming that their rug for sale on ebay is woven with Navajo Churro wool. No such claim is legitimate, unless the seller knows where the specific yarns originate, meaning from which sheep. Churro yarn is not identifiable from touch or appearance. Knowledge of wool origin is impossible with old rugs and blankets. We buy our Navajo Churro sheep yarn from the only legitimate Churro yarn vendor in America that sells Churro yarn in quantity. They are located in El Prado, NM (outside Taos). Genuine Churro yarn costs roughly 2X what all other trading post Navajo weaving yarn costs ($26 / lb. compared with routine trading post yarn ~$10 - $13 / lb.). The Churro yarn that we give to all of our weaver to weave rugs for us is also sold at higher retail cost at a weaving supply shop in Taos, NM (Weaving Southwest). We are happy to provide our Churro yarn source to anyone who is interested. This is not confidential information. We suggest you Google "Navajo Churro" sheep / yarn to better understand why this is such a highly touted, expensive weaving yarn. The rug for sale here is one of our company's "Cortez Collection" of Navajo rugs. We will provide the buyer with a signed & dated detailed description, photos of the weaver, and a retail appraisal.
