Facebook notes from the release at Hidden Harbor in Pittsburgh, PA:
From a Facebook post on Oct 16, 2019
“They’ve landed! Meet the new *space robot* versions of our signature Crazy Al mug, designed by Scott Scheidly aka “Flounder” and sculpted and produced by John Mulder of Eekum Bookum, each in cooperation with Al himself. We’ll be releasing these atomic age-inspired beauties at our “Space is the Place” Halloween-ish party on Saturday, November 2, with Al and John on hand to kiss mugs and sign babies (or vice versa), and DJ MB supplying the far-out tunes and visuals.
We’ll have 100 mugs available to take home in each of these two handsome mid-mod glazes (sky blue and seafoam green), each standing about 9 inches tall. Mugs will be $100 each, limit one of each glaze per customer. Online sales will then follow on our website *after* our VanTiki Cursed Monkey’s Fist release on November 16, if supplies allow, at a modestly higher price. Mahalo!”

It’s gonna be an “Al-oween” party this Saturday as we welcome back our good friend, “Crazy Al” Evans, from Long Beach, California for his third mug release event at Hidden Harbor. Al carved our signature 7-foot Ku-style tiki back in 2015 and later sculpted a mug in its image, which we have now released in two versions in six total glazes. For the next one, we wanted to do something special.
Inspired by a pair of space-themed mugs that Scott Scheidly aka Flounder designed for Tiki Farm about a decade ago, which remain some of our absolute faves, we enlisted Scott to design a space robot version of Al’s carving, complete with ray gun and rocket pack. We expected the Ku portion to be fairly stylized, but Scott, a friend of Al and long admirer of his work, insisted on designing it exactly like Al’s tiki, right down to the dents in the palm bark.
With that kind of detail, a top-notch sculptor was needed to translate the mug into three dimensions, and John Mulder of Eekum Bookum in St. Petersburg, Florida, a friend of both Al and Scott who also produced our Shark Bob mugs, was more than up to the task, creating this crazy-detailed sculpt, adding his own touches, and handling production.
Al consulted on both the design and production, and it’s fitting that all three artists’ names are on the bottom of the mug, with both Al and John able to join us for the release this weekend. We hope you can, too, as it’s going to a super far-out party. Mahalo!
