He took time to takean automobile ride, which he always enjoyed. Judge Rice had a wide circle offriends in the State and no gathering of the bar association of Middlesex Countywas considered complete without him. He was admitted tothe Bar as an attorney at law in November 1876, and as a Counsellor in November1880.He wasProsecutor of the Pleas of Middlesex County from 1882 until 1890; Judge ofMiddlesex County Common Pleas Court from 1890 to 1896; United States DistrictAttorney from 1896 to 1900 (appointed by President Grover Cleveland); served onthe Federal Draft Board from 1917 to 1919; and was a member of the State Boardof Conservation and Development in 1919.J.Kearney Rice was a strong and sturdy personality, a man of decided opinions, reticent, brief in speech, a deep thinker, an ardent lover of the profession ofthe law, and ever ready to preserve its dignity and traditions. He was athorough student of the law, an earnest advocate, a tireless defender of theState of New Jersey and fearless prosecutor of offenders of its laws, and an ableand impartial judge. Loyalty to his client, thoroughness in preparation, andearnestness in presentation, were his distinguishing legal characteristics.As apublic official, his high sense of duty and responsibility for whatever officehe filled was strongly marked.
