This is an antique Japanese mid Meiji Era (c. 1890's) thick bronze vajra Dorje ritual Buddhist bell. This type of bell was used in a large community Buddhist shrine when a Japanese monk chanted sutra. There is a incised design of a lotus blossom on the top of the bell (see pictures 3 and 7). It has the original clanger which has been re-hung on the inside (see picture 10).This Dorji bell measures 2 3/8" in diameter by 5 7/8" tall (6.0 x 14.9 cm). Having b...een used lovingly for over a century, along with a warm aged patina, this bronze bell remains in fine condition.
