The historic September 17, 1950, game between the New York Yankees and St. Louis Browns at Sportsman's Park saw future legend Mickey Mantle summoned from the minors, wearing a Yankee uniform for first time in his storied career. Although he rode the bench for the remaining few days of the season, the 18-year-old Joplin-ite nevertheless traveled, took batting practice and rubbed shoulders with idols DiMaggio, Berra, & more. To quote his former partner in crime Whitey ...Ford, "I remember Mantle joining us in St. Louis, and that was the first time I ever saw him. I didn't meet him. He was so shy, he didn't talk to anybody... But I remember him and Moose (Skowron) taking batting practice with us before the game, and they put on a great show.
