"Campy, " as he was known, was severely injured in an automobile accident in January 1958 which left him paralyzed. One of the top catchers in all of baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers, he was to move with the team to Los Angeles for the 1958 season, but ended-up never playing a game for L.A. The Benefit Gam...e the Dodgers staged for their beloved catcher pitted them against the World Champion New York Yankees in an exhibition game at the Coliseum. A record crowd (at the time) of 93, 103 witnessed the contest, which was won by the Yankees 8-2. At the end of the 5th inning, the lights were turned out and fans were asked to raise their lighters and matches in a special moving tribute to Campanella.
