Offered for sale is a pair of Boston Acoustics A40 two way 6 1/2" bookshelf speakers. Boston Acoustics, founded by a pair of Henry Kloss disciples, was a fledgeling domestic speaker manufacturer prior to the introduction of the A40 in the early 80's. The A40 was responsible for putting Boston Acoustics on the map as a respectable speaker manufacturer. With the Henry Kloss influence it's no surprise they sound and look similar to the baby Advents. Housed in a unique looking green marble... vinyl clad wood cabinet. The manufacturer's specifications are: Frequency response - 68 Hz to 20, 000 Hz; Impedance - 8 ohm nominal; Sensitivity - 88.5 dB; Drivers - 6 1/2" long throw woofer and a 3/4" ferrofluid cooled tweeter; Cross over frequency - 3, 500 Hz; Dimensions (W x D x H, inches) - 8 1/4 x 7 1/4 x 13 1/2; Weight - 9 lbs.
I acquired these speakers at a local estate sale. When I acquired them they were in desperate need of a woofer re-foam job. I purchased some high quality foam surrounds made specifically for this speaker and re-foamed them. Checked for voice coil rub and there was none. The cabinets and in very good condition with just some minor signs of wear and age. The grill are very nice with no tears, snags or stains. One of the best sounding 6 1/2" speakers I ever tested.
The A40's were reviewed by a popular high fidelity magazine and were well praised. Their conclusion stated:
"The speakers in this category that are most often chosen for budget systems general fall short of meeting minimum high fidelity standards. The Boston Acoustics A40 is a welcome exception to that rule. Obviously it cannot develop a room-shaking bass output, the laws of physics and economics make that impossible, but even that lack is unlikely to be noticed unless one is specifically listening for it. By way of compensation, the overall balance and smoothness of the A40's sound are those of a good speaker by any standard, it can hold its own in some very exalted circles ……… Very few forward-radiating systems we have seen can match its dispersion ……. Extended listening to the A40 has shown us that there is nothing about its sound to identify it as coming from a smallish, inexpensive speaker."
