Be sure to read the entire listing before bidding!Up for sale is a functional Harman Kardon Citation III-X stereo tuner, designed by the legendary Stu Hegeman.First the good news: I had it restored in 2013 by Mike Williams of RadioX Tuners in 2013. Also, modern high-quality extra output jacks were added.In 2014 I had a brand-new cabinet made for the unit. Original HK Citation cabinets are extremely rare and almost sixty years old; I bought one several years ago for $1...50. The newer cabinet shown in the photos is included in this sale.
Unfortunately, the unit is no longer operating up to specification. An experienced local technician says that the capacitors inside the IF transformers are degrading. The stereo separation and tuning sensitivity are not up to specification.If you have the parts and talent to fix the IF transformers, this unit is well worth the effort.I have been using it with an external MPX decoder, the LM-4500 based solid-state decoder designed by Bob Fitzgerald. I had a local tech wire it for me and it is in a small enclosure, the black box shown in a photo. The enclosure is compact enough to hide behind the tuner if you wish. It can be used with other tuners.I plug the decoder into the switched outlet on the back of the tuner. If you want to install the board in place of the Citation MPX decoder, the board is much more compact. I have included a photo of an identical board installed in a Sherwood tuner; this is for illustration purposes only and neither that second board nor the Sherwood tuner is included in this sale.The performance of the external decoder is very good on my strong local stations. Audio quality is competitive with my Pioneer TX-9500 II.All my audio equipment was installed and used exclusively by me in a smoke-free, child-free home. I guarantee its full functionality (as described in the listing); otherwise sold as is. If you find a functional fault that I missed within 72 hours of delivery, or if the item is damaged in transit, I will issue a full refund. Items returned for refund must be shipped back within four business days of delivery to you. Cosmetic condition is used and is shown in the photos. Local pickup is welcome.
