1899 Columbia Q Cylinder Phonograph W/Nickel Horn & Plays Great
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:17893254 |
Here's an outstanding Columbia Q phonograph, the 1st version, ca. 1899-1900, with a nickeled bedplate, a large banner decal on the front of the lid and no award emblem on the back.
Condition is excellent. Large diaphragm floating reproducer has a good sapphire and undamaged mica. Plays both wax and celluloid cylinders, and comes with an early Columbia black wax cylinder. Original cabinet decal is in excellent condition. Nice wood lid, with a clean original finish and no chipped or damaged veneer. Both original rod guides are clean and intact, and the lid screws securely to the base.
Mechanism is really clean and running well. Motor and gearing are in perfect working order, and the governor keeps the mandrel spinning at a steady speed. When wound, the phonograph has no trouble playing an entire cylinder without needing to be re-wound.
The phonograph plays great and sounds great.
The 10" nickel horn is a replica from Ron Sitko. It's almost indistinguishable from an original horn, except that unlike most original nickel horns, it doesn't look like a squadron of BB-gun toting 9-year-olds have been using it for target practice. Filigree winding key is original, with no rust and minimal plating wear.
As noted above, I'll include a pristine 2-minute Columbia cylinder with the phonograph so it will be ready to play as soon as it arrives. If you get tired of listening to it, there are plenty of other titles available on ebay and elsewhere. The machine plays Edison cylinders too, I should note, along with those made by Oxford, Lakeside, etc. And if you're not already familiar with how to operate an early cylinder phonograph, don't worry. I'll provide you with simple, easy to understand set-up instructions, so you'll be able to use it within minutes after you unpack it and put it together. That's about it. I will carefully prep everything for shipping and pack everything carefully and properly. I've been shipping fragile antique phonographs and wireless sets for years, and I know how to get them to you safely. Buyer prepays and includes shipping.
