Master Animation Cel Setup From The 1969 Animated Cartoon Series, “Hot Wheels”
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:1795135 | Artwork Type: Production Cel |
Original/Reproduction: Original Production Art | Age: Pre-1970 |
Studio/Show: Ken Snyder Properties |
Item:
Three characters with an original background and an overlay cel.
Dimensions are 11” high x 15” wide.
Condition:
All three characters have been trimmed to their inked outline and applied onto the
cel or the background. Kip has been applied to the background whereas Ardeth
and Tank have been applied to the overlay cel with the painted oil drum.
There is some paint loss o...n the oil drum and a little on the background where the
cel stuck to it at the top. The trimmed cel images themselves look to be in excellent
condition and are fully adhered. Back has a tape and eyelet so it appears that it may
have been displayed at some point but the colors are strong and vibrant.
Other Information:
Hot Wheels was a Saturday morning cartoon series that aired from 1969-1971, primarily sponsored
by Mattel Toys so it was basically a 30 minute commercial to sell Hot Wheels toys and merchandise.
It was so blatant that the FCC received complaints (mainly from their competitors) that they
ordered stations to log part of the cartoons broadcast airings as advertising time.
The show might be best described by mashing Speed Racer with Scooby Doo.
Although Casey Kasem was the only direct crossover (voicing Dexter Carter & Tank Mallory),
many of the characters personas and voices were almost a carbon copy of the Scooby Doo Show.
Some of the obvious characters are Jack "Rabbit" Wheeler (Freddie) Ardeth Pratt (Thelma)
and Janet Martin (Daphne).
Characters present on the cel/background (left to right) Kip Chogi, Ardeth Pratt, and Tank Mallory.
There was also a Hot Wheels comic book although I’m unsure if the comic preceded
the show or vice-versa. I believe that Alex Hoth was one of the creative artists in
development of this show, he also worked on Jonny Quest among many other productions.
Fifty years later this is considered a lost classic by many animation fans. Unless you are
at least 55 yrs. old, chances are you may have never heard about this series...and finding a
piece from this cartoon is quite rare.
Why Buy from Me? / Why Sell your Art?:
I have been a longtime collector of animation art, I studied under some early Disney animators
and also worked in the field for a time. With my background and my experience as a collector,
I believe that I am fairly knowledgeable of the art that the industry generated.
Most of my art has COA’s or other documentation and/or analysis to support it as genuine
and authentic. In the rare case that an item lacks significant certification or data I will clearly state
it as opinion or a widely held belief.
I am liquidating a fair amount of my personal collection for upcoming and anticipated
fair amount of student college expenses...no not mine...those days are over.
I have researched my collection rather well so I can answer any questions
you may have about this piece or any other pieces that I am selling.
If in the rare case that I don’t know the answer, I will try to find it for you.
Please contact me if you have any questions and I will answer them
as soon as possible. Please see my other items for sale, I anticipate putting up
a number of pieces each week as I am able.
