This is an authentic (NOT a modern reprint) vintage 1960 photogravure (also known as Héliogravure) made from the original 1940's negative/print created by the internationally renown photographer K.F.Wong. In the 1940's Wong owned a photographic studio in Kuching, Sarawak and photographed the indigenous peoples of this region as a matter of interest and documentation. Through the years his photography has remained a significant point of reference and aesthetic delight - permanently recording a time and way of life now forever gone. He largely focused on the people of Sarawak and felt that the young women there were among the most attractive of the purely Eastern races. Today K.F. Wong's vintage photographs areheld in important museums and collections worldwide.

ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravureis an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copperplate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made bypressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate whichhas been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with theactual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched platecombined with a fine "honeycomb" screen controls the amount of ink tobe transferred to the paper at any given point in direct proportion tothe variation of tone in the original image. The result is a truecontinuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditionalsilver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph.Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicatelyrendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographicprint making. In the early to mid 1900's photogravure was selected(when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing andportfolio projects, but due to it's significant expense and labor, theprocess is rarely seen today.
