DESCRIPTION.Presented is a circa 1880 oil on canvas depicting a three-quarter length portrait of an English military officer, identif...ied as Major Robert George Davies (1836-1891). The subject is depicted with one had holding his cap and the other half-tucked in his waistcoat.
The identification is based on an inscription that was attached to a separate miniature piece depicting the same subject (shown in the last picture), which we had sold previously.
The work is presented in a gilt frame with a Barton & Long Ltd. label attached to the verso.
The work is in a good to fair antique condition. The canvas remains unlined and shows overall toning and darkening. Minimal craquelure visible in some areas as well as retouches to small areas of paint loss on the upper right corner and the lower parts of the painting.
