ITEM DESCRIPTION:ORIGINAL / Rare White Star Line RMS OLYMPIC / TITANIC-Era 1st-Class Steward(?) Button
An extraordinary waist-coat button for the White Star Line by Waterbury Button Co. The front is stamped with “White Star Line, ” around a unique manufactured French Ivory* star inset. The back is hallmarked: “Waterbury Button Co.” Up until 1910, White St...ar Line used Waterbury to supply crew buttons. In the past I either read or heard that these “star-pattern” buttons were used by stewards, due to their direct contact with passengers. Along with the enameled cap “Star badge, ” it would have added an elegance to the victualling crew. I do not know if this is correct.
I have other identical buttons of this type, and it is noted that the star appears to be upside-down, with the top of the star pointing to the word “Line.” This pattern-type was still in use by crew members on-board the RMS TITANIC. A similar “inset” button was reportedly given by a crew member to 3rd-Class survivor Frank Goldsmith, who donated it to the Titanic Historical Society. It also has the “upside-down star.”
The button is in excellent condition, with wear commensurate to its age and usage. SEE PHOTOS FOR CONDITION.
*French Ivory (celluloid) is a manufactured product from the camphor tree and does not contain real animal ivory.

Personal Conservator Notes on Original Historical Artifacts and Ephemera:
• All Items are from my personal collection. These are historically invaluable treasures to me and I do my best to treat them as such.• All items are stored and displayed in a smoke free home or storage area. • I try to maintain a RH of 45-55%, with an ambient temperature of 74 degrees. These are the most important factors for a collection.• I do not use flash photography on ephemera or textiles.• I do not display artifacts or ephemera in direct sunlight.• I handle documents and photos with the use of white cotton research gloves. • I handle unstable ceramics and glass with the use of nitrile gloves.• I hand wash and dry silver goods. I limit the polishing of silver, as this process removes a layer of plating each time. However, many of the items will receive a light polish to enhance their defects in the photos. • This item was displayed or photographed in a home with a small dog, a Japanese Chin. Keep this in mind, if you have dog hair allergies.
